How the Duolingo English Test is scored
The DET reports an overall score from 10 to 160 in five-point increments, plus eight subscores: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening individually, and four integrated subscores built by averaging pairs of them. Because every skill feeds two integrated subscores, one weak skill drags down two numbers at once.

How can I practise for the Duolingo English Test for free?
Take all six full-length mock tests here at no cost during launch — each is a complete simulation with all 13 question types and a scored report including your four subscores. Duolingo also offers its own free practice test on the official site, which is worth doing as well. The more full-length attempts you sit under real timing, the less test day surprises you.
Why take a mock test before paying for the official DET?
Because every official attempt is paid. The Duolingo English Test costs $70 USD per attempt (Duolingo also sells a discounted two-test bundle), you can buy up to three tests in any 30-day period, and certified results take about two days unless you pay for faster turnaround. A full mock here is free for a limited time and shows which subscore is holding you back, so the attempt you pay for is one you are ready for. The full breakdown is in how much the DET costs.
Is this the official Duolingo English Test?
No. DET Mock Tests is an independent preparation platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Duolingo, Inc. Book your official test through Duolingo directly. We only help you prepare for it.
Which of the six mock tests should I take first?
Any of them. Each runs to the real test's length and structure — about an hour, all 13 question types in the same order, adapting to your level as it goes — and no question appears in more than one, so the order you take them in does not change what they measure. Most people start with Mock Test 1, which the Take a test button opens directly (once you have finished it, the same button opens your next untaken test), and keep the others to check progress after a week or two of practice.
Do the mock tests include Interactive Speaking and the other current tasks?
Yes. The mocks follow the format Duolingo has used since July 2025: all 13 active question types, including Interactive Speaking, Interactive Reading and Interactive Listening, with the retired Read Aloud and Listen, Then Speak left out. That matters because the format catches people out more than the English does — adaptive difficulty that keeps pushing until it finds your ceiling, single-take recordings, no going back and short timers. Practising the format is usually worth more than extra vocabulary study.
What happens to my recordings after a mock?
You can play them back on your report, and that copy stays in this browser on this device. To grade your speaking, each recording is sent once to be transcribed, the transcript is scored, and the audio is discarded — we never store it. No camera is used at any point. How do I raise my Duolingo English Test score?
Start with a full-length diagnostic and read the subscores rather than the overall number. Because each subscore combines two skills, the weakest skill is usually dragging two numbers down at once — for most people that is Production, which combines writing and speaking. Drill that skill in short daily sets, then re-sit a full mock every week or two to confirm the change is real.
Do I need a microphone and webcam?
A microphone, yes — several question types are spoken and they feed two of the four subscores, and your browser asks for it when you reach the first speaking question. No webcam: nothing here uses a camera, the Speaking Sample included. The official test is different — it is proctored through your webcam and your phone's camera — but for practice any modern laptop works.
Can I practise on my phone?
Drills, score reports and study plans work fully on mobile. We recommend taking full-length mock tests on a laptop or desktop, because the official test is delivered on a computer and the typing tasks feel very different on a small keyboard.
